What the job looks like

A storage unit is the most expensive way to keep things you have stopped looking at. Most units that get cleared have been paid on for years, and the door has not been opened in months. Once you decide it is going, the whole thing needs to be out before the next billing date, and most facilities want the unit swept and the lock removed.

We meet you at the facility, or you send us the gate code and unit number, and we clear it in one visit. Furniture, boxes, appliances, bikes, tubs of clothes - it all goes on the truck. Anything you want kept is set aside first. Usable items get routed to donation, metal to scrap, and the rest is hauled off. You get an empty unit and a photo of it.

Getting the unit ready to hand back

Facilities are strict about how a unit is left, and the rules are usually the same: swept clean, nothing left behind, your lock off the door, and the office told in writing that you are out. Miss the billing date by a day and you owe another month, so the clear-out is worth scheduling a week before the cycle turns over.

Tell the office you are moving out before we arrive. Some facilities want a move-out form, some want the notice on a particular date, and a few will do a walk-through with you. None of that is a problem, but it is easier to find out on the phone than at the gate.

If the unit is not yours - a parent's, a relative's, an estate - bring the paperwork that shows you can access it. Facilities will not open a unit for a hauler without the tenant or an authorised person present, and they are right not to.

How it runs

What a storage unit cleanout actually looks like

Open it and look. The first five minutes are a walk-through with you. Anything staying gets pulled to the front and put in your vehicle or set aside by the door. Everything else is going.

Big pieces out first. Mattresses, dressers, couches and appliances come out and set the shape of the load. Boxes and loose items fill in around them.

Boxes go unopened unless you want them opened. We are not going to sort through your things unless you ask us to. If you want to check boxes as they come out, plan to be there and allow the extra time.

Sweep and photograph. An empty unit with a layer of dust and a few bits of packing foam is not what the office wants to see. We sweep it out and take a photo so you have proof of the condition it was left in.

A 10x10 that is packed to the door is usually a couple of hours. A 5x5 or a half-full unit is under an hour. A 10x30 full of a whole house is most of a day and may need two truck loads, which we tell you before we start.
