What actually moves the price on a furniture job

Furniture is priced on the space it takes in the truck, not per item, and the things that change that number are not always the things people expect.

Volume, not weight. A sectional sofa and a dining set can weigh about the same and take completely different amounts of room. A sofa is mostly air inside a large frame, which is why it costs more to haul than a heavier but denser load.

Which floor it is on. A piece at the curb is the cheapest version of this job. The same piece in a finished basement or a third-floor walk-up in Waukegan or North Chicago takes two people and more time.

Whether it has to come apart. Sectionals separate at the connectors and that is quick. A one-piece sleeper sofa that will not clear a stairwell turn has to have legs off and sometimes the frame cut, and that is a decision worth making before we start rather than halfway down the stairs.

What else is going with it. Adding the bed frame, the old mattress and the boxes in the corner to a sofa pickup costs far less than booking them as a second visit, because the truck is already there.

Disposal category. Most furniture goes through general disposal. Mattresses carry their own per-item fee at the transfer station, so a bedroom set with a mattress in it is priced differently from one without.

Donation, recycling and what genuinely has to be thrown away

Anything still usable goes to a donation drop rather than a landfill, and on a normal furniture load that is a real share of it. Solid wood dressers, dining chairs, bookcases, desks and working recliners are all things a Lake County donation centre will take.

What none of them will take is upholstered furniture with stains, tears, pet damage or any sign of pests, and no charity in Illinois accepts used mattresses. That is not us being difficult, it is their intake policy, and anyone promising to donate your stained sofa is telling you what you want to hear.

Metal frames, bed rails and anything with a significant steel content go to scrap. Particle-board furniture, which is most of what comes out of a first apartment, is not recyclable in any practical sense and goes to disposal.

We do not send you a certificate or an itemised list of where each piece ended up. What we will do is tell you honestly at the walk which pieces are likely to be donated and which are not, so you are not surprised either way.

Five minutes of prep that makes the job cheaper

Empty the drawers. A dresser full of clothes is heavier, more likely to be damaged in the stairwell, and often has something in the back of a drawer that somebody wanted. Empty is faster and safer.

Decide before we arrive, not during. The single biggest variable on a multi-piece job is how long the decisions take. If it is all going, say so and we work at full speed. If half is staying, put tape on what stays.

Clear the route. Rugs that slide, shoes in the hallway and a car parked tight to the garage all cost time. Ten minutes of clearing the path is worth more than anything else you can do.

Send a photo from far enough back. Close-ups of one chair do not tell us the volume. One picture of the whole room, taken from the doorway, gets you an accurate number rather than a range.

Flag the awkward one. If there is a piece you already know is not going to fit through the door, tell us in the message. That is the piece the whole job is scheduled around.

Do you take furniture out of an upstairs bedroom, or does it have to be at the curb?

We take it from wherever it is. Upstairs bedrooms, finished basements, third-floor walk-ups in North Chicago and Waukegan. That is the whole point of paying someone rather than wrestling a sleeper sofa down a stairwell yourself. Tell us which floor it is on when you send the photo so we bring the right number of people.

Will you take a sofa apart if it will not fit through the door?

Yes. Sectionals usually come apart at the connectors. Older one-piece sofas sometimes have to have the legs off and the frame turned, and occasionally a recliner has to be cut down to clear a stairwell. We will tell you before we start if that is what it is going to take, because once it is cut it is not going back.

What happens to furniture that is still in good shape?

Anything genuinely usable goes to a donation drop rather than the landfill. Is there anything in a furniture load you will not take?

Nothing with bed bugs, and nothing soaked through with mould or sewage. Those are a health issue for the truck and for the next job. Everything else in a normal household furniture load is fine.
