Why a mattress costs more to get rid of than a sofa

It is not the weight and it is not the size. It is that mattresses are handled on their own line at almost every facility, and there is a separate fee per unit to do it.

The reason is mechanical. A mattress is layers of foam, fabric and steel springs bonded together, and when it goes through general processing the springs wrap around the shafts of the equipment and stop the line. Facilities that take them charge for the labour of pulling them out and cutting them apart, and that fee gets passed through rather than buried in the quote.

Where a recycler is available, a mattress comes apart into genuinely useful streams: the steel goes to scrap, the foam gets shredded for carpet underlay, the wood frame is chipped and the fabric is baled. That is a better outcome than landfill and it is where ours go when the facility takes them.

Box springs are priced like a second unit because they occupy the same footprint and carry the same fee. Metal bed frames and wooden slats go in with the load at no extra charge, since those are ordinary scrap and timber.

Donation, resale and bed bugs

Donation is not an option, and anyone saying otherwise is not being straight with you. Illinois donation centres, shelters and thrift operations do not accept used mattresses. Not clean ones, not nearly-new ones. The bedding-pest risk is enough that the policy is blanket. If a hauler tells you your mattress is going to a good home, it is going to a landfill.

Resale is the same story. Selling a used mattress privately is legal in Illinois but it has to be disclosed as used and almost nobody buys. It is not worth the weeks of it sitting in your garage.

Bed bugs change the job, and you have to tell us in advance. We can still take an infested mattress, but it has to be bagged and sealed in the room before it moves, and the truck is handled differently afterwards. Finding out on the doorstep is the one thing that gets a job turned away, because moving an unbagged infested mattress through a house and into a truck spreads it to the next customer.

Time it with the delivery. The easiest version of this job is booking us for the same day the new bed arrives. The old one goes straight out and never spends a week leaning against the garage wall.
