What the job looks like
A dead hot tub is a few hundred pounds of shell, frame and waterlogged foam that was delivered by crane or carried in before the fence went up. Getting it out is exactly the kind of job you should not do with a rented saw and a free weekend.
We drain what is left, cut the unit into sections when there is no clear path, and haul all of it - shell, skirt, cover and pad debris. Decks, tight gates and backyard installs are the normal case, not the exception.

What it costs
What decides the price on a hot tub
Access. This is the whole job. A tub on a patio with a gate straight to the driveway is a fraction of the cost of the same tub on a raised deck behind a six-foot fence with a slope down to the street. Send a photo of the route out, not just the tub.
Whether it has to be cut. Most spas come apart in place: cabinet panels off, plumbing and equipment out, then the shell cut into sections that clear a standard gate. That is the normal method and it is faster and safer than trying to walk a thousand-pound shell through a garden.
Size. A two-person tub and an eight-person swim spa are different days of work. Swim spas in particular are longer, deeper and take considerably more cutting.
What goes with it. Cover, steps, surround decking and the equipment box can all go in the same visit. Covers are waterlogged and far heavier than people expect, which is worth confirming is included when you compare quotes.
Whether it is drained. A full spa cannot be moved. If it still has water in it when we arrive, the job does not happen that day.
Draining
Draining it properly, and the Lake County winter problem
Start the night before. A typical spa holds four hundred gallons or more, and a garden hose on the drain valve moves that slowly. A submersible pump does it in well under an hour if you have one or can borrow one.
Where the water goes matters. Do not dump several hundred gallons of chlorinated or brominated water straight onto a lawn or into a storm drain. Stop adding chemicals a few days ahead so the level drops, then run it slowly onto a gravel area or into a sanitary cleanout. Slowly is the operative word — a fast dump in a Lake County yard with clay soil runs straight to the neighbour.
In winter, assume the drain valve is seized and there is ice in the footwell. A frozen tub is still removable but it is heavier and it takes longer, so tell us rather than letting us find out. If the tub has been sitting unused through a Lake County winter, there is usually cracked plumbing inside as well, which does not change the removal but does end any thought of selling it.
Once it is drained, switch the breaker off at the panel and label it. The disconnect box on the wall stays until an electrician removes it, but the circuit should be dead before anyone starts pulling panels.
Around the county
Where this job comes from in Lake County
Hot tub work spreads across the whole county but the shape of the job changes with the property. Larger lots along the lake in Highland Park, Lake Forest, Lake Bluff and Bannockburn tend to have spas on raised decks or in built-in surrounds, which means more dismantling and a longer carry to the street. The subdivisions through Gurnee, Grayslake, Vernon Hills and Round Lake Beach more often have a tub on a patio or a slab with a straightforward gate run. The lake towns produce the swim spas. Whatever the property, the two variables are the same: the route out and whether it is drained. Send one photo of the tub and one of the path from the tub to the driveway, taken from far enough back to show the gate. That pair of pictures is worth more than any description, and it is what a real quote is built from.
Questions
Everything people ask us
Does the hot tub have to be drained before you arrive?
Yes, and it is the single thing that most often pushes a hot tub job to another day. A full spa holds several hundred gallons and weighs thousands of pounds with water in it. Draining takes hours on a garden hose, so start the night before. If it is frozen or the drain is seized, tell us and we will plan around it.
How do you get it out of the back yard?
Most hot tubs get cut down in place. The shell is fibreglass or acrylic over a wood or composite frame, and it comes apart into panels that fit through a gate. A crane or a lift is almost never necessary in a residential yard. If there is a genuinely clear path and the tub is small, sometimes it goes out whole on a dolly.
Will you disconnect the power?
A spa is normally on a dedicated 240-volt circuit with a disconnect box. We can pull the connection at the tub, but the breaker and the disconnect box are an electrician's job if you want them removed properly. At minimum, have the breaker switched off and labelled before we arrive.
What about the cover and the steps and the surround?
All of it goes in the same visit if you want it gone. Covers are waterlogged and much heavier than people expect, which is worth knowing when you are comparing a quote that included the cover against one that did not.
Do you fix the deck or the pad it was sitting on?
No, we haul. What we will do is tell you what you are going to find under it. A tub that sat on a wood deck for a decade has usually left rot underneath, and one on a concrete pad has usually left staining. Better to know before the cover comes off.
Is a swim spa or an above-ground pool the same job?
Same principle, more volume. Swim spas are longer and heavier and take more cutting. Above-ground pools bring liner, frame and often a sand base. Both are quotable from photos, but send one from far enough back to show the whole thing and the route out.
