Why you cannot put a TV at the curb in Illinois

Illinois bans a specific list of electronics from landfill under the Electronic Products Recycling and Reuse Act. Televisions, computer monitors, desktops, laptops, printers, scanners, keyboards, mice, fax machines, VCRs, DVD players, video game consoles and small-scale servers are all on it.

What that means in practice is that your village hauler will leave a television on the curb, and the transfer station will refuse it inside a general load. It has to go to an approved electronics recycler, and that is a separate stop with its own fee schedule.

Lake County runs electronics collection events and permanent drop sites, which are free for residents and are genuinely the cheapest option if you have one television and a car big enough. Where we are worth paying for is the sixty-inch screen nobody wants to carry, a whole basement of old equipment, or an office with fifty monitors.

The reason the fee exists at all is the old tube sets. A CRT television contains several pounds of leaded glass, and the number of facilities in the region still willing to process it has fallen every year. Flat panels are cheaper to handle, which is why a wall-mounted LED costs less to take away than the smaller, heavier set it replaced.

If there is anything on a machine you would not want read, pull the drive before it goes. On most desktops it is four screws and a cable. On a laptop it is a panel on the underside. Keep it, drill it, or hit it with a hammer — a physically destroyed platter is the only version of this with no argument.

Do not overlook the things that are not obviously computers. Printers and copiers store scanned documents. Old phones and tablets hold accounts. External drives get forgotten in a drawer. All of them come in the same load and all of them should be wiped or stripped first.

For a business the requirement is different. If you need documentation for your own compliance or your insurer, say so before the job and we will route the load to a recycler that issues a certificate of destruction. That is not something we can produce afterwards, so it has to be arranged in advance.

Small items are cheap to add. The drawer of dead chargers, remotes, cables and old phones belongs in the same trip as the television, and it costs very little to include.
