What to know before it comes out

Most treadmills fold and most do not fit through a door folded. Ellipticals rarely come out whole. We bring the tools and take them apart, so there is nothing you need to do except make sure there is a path from where it sits to the door. Moving the rug it has been standing on for ten years is optional but you will want to see what is under it before we arrive.

If the machine still works, say so. A working treadmill or bike is something a charity or a youth programme can use, and it costs no more for us to route it there than to scrap it. A machine with a dead motor, a cracked deck or a frame that has rusted through is scrap, and the steel is the useful part.

Weight plates and dumbbells are priced by the space they take, not by the pound, which for once works in your favour: a few hundred pounds of iron is a small pile in the truck.

What an exercise equipment pickup actually looks like

Look at the route. From the machine to the truck, counting stairs, turns and door widths. This decides whether it comes out whole or in pieces.

Unplug and disassemble. Consoles, uprights, arms and rails come off. On a treadmill the deck and the motor housing usually separate. On a home gym the weight stack comes out first because it is where all the weight is.

Carry. Two people, stairs included, walls protected. Basement stairs with a turn at the top are the normal case, not the exception.

Load and route. Steel to the scrap side of the load, working machines kept upright for donation, electronics and consoles kept dry.

One machine is usually under an hour including disassembly. A full home gym - rack, bench, cable machine, plates - is a couple of hours.
