What the job looks like
Most garages stop holding cars years before anyone admits it. Boxes from the last move, tools that stopped working, sports gear three sizes ago - it accumulates one weekend at a time until the door barely closes.
We clear it in one visit. You point at what goes and what stays, we do the sorting muscle, the loading and the sweep-up, and the space comes back the same day. Usable items get routed to donation, metal to scrap, and the rest hauled off.

Where we do garage cleanouts
Hazardous waste
The things that cannot go in the truck, and where they actually go
Every garage in Lake County has a shelf of things a general hauler is not allowed to take, and it is usually the same shelf. Old latex and oil paint. Motor oil and antifreeze. Solvents, thinner and brake cleaner. Weedkiller and pesticide. Car batteries. Propane cylinders from the grill. Pool chemicals. Fluorescent tubes and CFL bulbs.
None of that belongs in a landfill and none of it can ride in a truck with household junk. Lake County runs a household hazardous waste facility and it is free for residents, which is genuinely the cheapest and simplest route. Bring it in the original container with the label on where you can.
What we do on the job is pull those items out and stack them in one place rather than quietly loading them. You end up with a small pile by the door and a clear list of what to run over, instead of finding out months later that a hauler put your old pesticide in a landfill.
Two exceptions worth knowing. Fully hardened latex paint, dried out with the lid off, can usually go in a general load. And car batteries are taken back free by most auto parts stores, so those do not need the county trip.
How it runs
What a garage cleanout day actually looks like
Walk it first. We go through with you and agree what stays. Anything staying gets moved to one corner or taped. This takes ten minutes and saves an hour of asking.
Hazardous comes out first. Before general loading starts, the chemical shelf gets separated so nothing ends up in the truck by accident.
Big items, then bulk. Furniture, appliances, mowers and bikes go out first because they set the shape of the load. Boxes and loose material fill around them.
Shelving last. Freestanding racks come out once they are empty. Anything screwed to the studs gets unbolted, and a built-in workbench gets cut free. Mention it in advance so the tools are on the truck.
Sweep. An empty garage with thirty years of dust, sawdust and mouse droppings on the slab does not look done. We sweep before we leave.
A packed two-car garage with no sorting is most of a morning. A normal accumulation is a couple of hours. A sorting job runs as long as the decisions take, which is the one part of this we cannot estimate for you.
Around the county
Where this job comes from in Lake County
Garage cleanouts are the most uniform job we do across Lake County, because a garage is a garage whether it is in Antioch or Deerfield. What varies is the contents. Lakefront and lake-adjacent towns — Fox Lake, Island Lake, Wauconda, Lake Villa, Antioch — produce boat gear, trailers, outboard parts and fuel cans, which means more hazardous material to separate. The older neighbourhoods in Waukegan, North Chicago and Zion produce tools, tyres and decades of accumulated hardware. Newer subdivisions in Gurnee, Grayslake and Round Lake Beach produce sports equipment, bikes and moving boxes that never got unpacked. The hazardous shelf exists in all of them. Lake County household hazardous waste collection is free for residents and it is where all of that should go, so we separate it out on site rather than quietly loading it.
Two more things that come up constantly and are worth deciding before the day. Tyres carry a per-item disposal fee because Illinois bans them from landfill, and four in the corner is the most common find in any garage in the county. And if there is an old refrigerator or chest freezer out there, that is an appliance with sealed refrigerant and it is priced separately from the general load. Neither is a problem, but both are cheaper to know about in advance than to discover mid-morning.
Questions
Everything people ask us
Do I have to sort everything before you come?
No, but it changes the price. If the whole garage is going, we load it and you do nothing. If half of it is staying, either mark what stays or plan to be there while we work, because we are not going to guess which box of your things is the one you wanted.
What about paint, oil, propane and other chemicals?
Those cannot go in a general load. Old paint, motor oil, solvents, pesticides, car batteries and propane tanks all need Lake County household hazardous waste collection, which is free for residents. We will pull them out and set them aside rather than quietly putting them in the truck.
How long does a two-car garage take?
Most of a morning if it is packed floor to ceiling and there is no sorting. A couple of hours if it is a normal accumulation of boxes, old furniture and yard tools. Sorting jobs run longer and it depends entirely on how fast decisions get made.
Can you take the shelving and the workbench too?
Yes. Freestanding shelving comes out as it is. Anything screwed to studs or a built-in bench gets unbolted or cut free. Mention it in advance so we bring the tools.
Will you take tyres?
Yes, with a per-tyre disposal fee, because tyres are banned from landfill in Illinois and have to go to a recycler. Four old tyres in the corner of a garage is one of the most common things we find.
Do you sweep out afterwards?
Yes. An empty garage with thirty years of dust and mouse droppings still on the slab does not look finished, so we sweep it before we go.
