What the job looks like

The last week of a move is when the junk shows up. The couch that will not fit the new place, the mattress that is not worth moving, the garage full of things that were never going to be packed, the pile the movers would not take. Meanwhile there is a closing date or a lease end and a landlord expecting the unit empty.

We come the day before the keys go back, or the day the movers leave, and clear what is left. Furniture, appliances, boxes, curbside piles, the contents of the garage and the basement. When to book a move-out cleanout

The mistake people make is booking us for moving day. Moving day is chaos - two crews in one house, a truck in the driveway and nobody sure what is staying. The clean-out works best the day after the movers, when the house is empty of everything that is going and what is left is, by definition, junk.

If you are selling, the walk-through is usually the day before closing, and the buyer expects the house empty and broom-clean. Book us two days before closing and there is a day of slack. If you are renting, the landlord's move-out inspection is the deadline and the deposit is what is at stake, so the same logic applies.

If you are being moved by an employer or the military - which is a lot of Lake County with Great Lakes in the middle of it - the movers will only take household goods. Anything they refuse, and anything in the garage or the yard, is what we are for.

How it runs

What a move-out cleanout day actually looks like

Walk it first. Ten minutes through the house with you, agreeing what goes. On a move-out that is usually everything, which makes this the fastest walk-through we do.

Furniture and appliances first. Whatever the movers left - the old fridge, the washer, the couch nobody wanted - comes out first and sets the shape of the load.

Then the rooms. Closets, the garage, the basement, the shed. Left-behind boxes, hangers, the contents of the medicine cabinet, paint cans from the last time the house was painted.

Curbside piles too. If you have already been stacking things at the curb that the village has not taken, that goes on the truck as well.

Sweep. Broom-clean is what most contracts and leases say. We sweep the garage and the main floors before we leave.

A house where the movers have already been is usually two or three hours. An apartment is an hour. A whole house that was never packed - where we are the movers and the junk crew - is a full day and priced as an estate cleanout.

We can, but the day after works better. The movers need the driveway and the doorways, and it is easier to see what is junk once everything that is going has gone.
