Why appliance disposal is priced differently from other junk

Appliances are the one category where the disposal fee, not the space in the truck, drives most of the price.

Sealed refrigerant units. Refrigerators, freezers, window air conditioners and dehumidifiers all contain refrigerant that has to be recovered under federal rules before the metal can be processed. That is federal law and it carries a per-unit fee at every facility in the state. It is the single biggest reason a fridge costs more to remove than a washing machine of the same size.

Everything else is scrap. Washers, dryers, ranges, dishwashers and water heaters are mostly steel. They go to a scrap processor rather than a landfill, which keeps the disposal cost lower.

Where it sits. A unit in the garage or already on the driveway is the cheapest version. A chest freezer at the bottom of a narrow basement stair in an older Waukegan or Libertyville house takes two people and a stair dolly, and that is priced in.

Disconnection. Unplugging a fridge and pulling an icemaker line is included. A gas range or a hardwired oven has to be disconnected by a licensed trade before we touch it, and that is on you to arrange.

Doing several at once. A kitchen remodel where the fridge, range, dishwasher and microwave all go in one visit costs far less per unit than four separate calls.

Safety

What has to happen before an appliance comes out

Gas. If it is a gas range, gas dryer or gas water heater, the supply has to be shut off and the appliance disconnected by a plumber or the gas utility. We will not cut, cap or crimp a gas line. This is not a liability formality — an improperly capped line is a genuine hazard in an occupied house.

Hardwired electrical. Wall ovens, cooktops and some dryers are wired directly rather than plugged in. Those need an electrician to disconnect and the breaker locked out. If you are not sure whether yours is plugged or hardwired, look behind it or send a photo.

Water. Dishwashers, washing machines and fridges with icemakers all have a supply line. Shut the valve first. A supply line that has not been closed in fifteen years sometimes will not close, and finding that out with the line already off is how a kitchen floods.

Doors on old fridges. If a fridge or freezer is going to sit outside waiting for us, take the door off or strap it shut. Old units with latching doors are a child entrapment risk and it takes two minutes to make safe.

None of this is meant to make the job sound complicated. Most appliance pickups are a plug, a dolly and a drive. It is worth naming the exceptions because they are the ones that turn a booked morning into a rescheduled afternoon.

Do you disconnect the appliance, or does it need to be unhooked already?

We will pull a plug, roll a fridge out and disconnect a standard water line on an icemaker. What we will not do is cut into a gas line or a hardwired connection. Gas ranges and hardwired ovens need a plumber or an electrician to disconnect them first. Say what it is when you send the photo and we will tell you which category it falls in.

What happens to the refrigerant in a fridge or freezer or AC unit?

Sealed refrigerant units go to a facility that recovers the refrigerant before the metal is processed. That is a legal requirement, not a courtesy, and it is why appliance disposal carries a fee that a pile of scrap wood does not.

Can you get a chest freezer up out of a basement?
